Introduction
North East Pharma has been established as a business-led organisation to provide a strong collective voice and point of co-ordination for North East pharmaceuticals and medicines manufacturers.
We aim to strengthen already productive relationships and partnerships within the sector and strengthen collaboration with partners across the region and beyond.
There are 12 pharmaceutical manufacturers in the North East of England sector including a diverse range of scale, business models, ownership arrangements and relationship structures with the regional and UK economy.
North East Pharma will enable new projects and programmes to be taken forward in support of this aim and serve as a vehicle to receive funding to facilitate the delivery of our mission.
Internationally Owned Sites
Six pharmaceutical manufacturing sites in the North East are internationally owned. Owners include US, Japanese, Chinese and Indian companies.
GVA Contribution
The North East pharmaceutical manufacturing Cluster directly employs more than 5,500 people within the region. The Cluster companies included in this report contribute at least £2.72 billion to the UK’s Gross Value Added (ONS 2023 data).
Product Export
Pharmaceutical manufacturing sites in the sector export an average of 61% of their products with 39% of exports going to the United States.
